AUSSIE ACE RICKETTS IS TOP SEED
AT ISS CANARY WHARF CLASSIC
Australia’s high-flying Anthony Ricketts is the top seed in the ISS
Canary Wharf Classic 2006.
Ricketts,
who splits his home base between Sydney and Reading, 40 miles west of
London, enters the tournament full of confidence after beginning the year
in style by winning the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Ricketts, the 2005 Canary Wharf runner-up to Scotland’s John White
in a spectacular final, relaunched his career in solid style last year
after an injury kept him off court for much of 2004. He raced up the
rankings after winning the Tournament Of Champions event in New York and
the British Open in Manchester.
World No.3 Ricketts is seeded to meet Frenchman Thierry Lincou in
the ISS Classic final. Lincou, like Ricketts, will also be aiming to go
one better after losing to England’s rising star James Willstrop in
the inaugural Canary Wharf tournament in 2003.
The
ISS Canary Wharf Classic runs from February 13-17 at the superb East
Wintergarden venue and is a PSA Five Star event. Willstrop is seeded three
and his England team-mate, the event co-promoter Peter Nicol, is
seeded four.
Ricketts beat Willstrop in the 2005 British Open final and the two are
seeded to meet in the Canary Wharf semi-final. In the bottom half of the
draw, Nicol is seeded to meet England team-mate Lee Beachill in the
quarter-finals, with Lincou, who was number one for most of 2005, due to
face England’s world No.8 Nick Matthew.
England’s top players will be keen to meet their performance targets at
Canary Wharf ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Australia in March, when
they will be seeking a collection of medals to add to the World Team
Championship they won in Pakistan in December.
